The following webinar series was designed for 4-H leaders and teen leaders to help improve their ability to serve the youth in their 4-H companion animal clubs.
Each webinar will have a 30-40 minute presentation with a question and answer period at the end.
The Healthy Dog

What is a healthy dog and how do you know if a dog is healthy? Learn about what a veterinarian looks for to determine if a dog is healthy. Also to be covered will be disease prevention and health testing and screening for inherited diseases.
Our speakers include Karen Potter DVM and Elizabeth Wells PhD. Karen Potter is a graduate of Michigan State University College of veterinary medicine and works in a mixed practice in Lincoln, Michigan. She breeds, shows and trains a variety of sporting dogs and has been an active participant in 4-H programs over the past 15 years. Elizabeth has a PhD from Michigan State University and retired after 26 years of service with MSU Extension. She now owns a private dog training business and is active in breeding, showing and training Samoyeds and Pomeranians. She gave leadership to the MSU 4-H Companion Animal program in Michigan for many years.

Cats are now the most popular companion animal in U.S. households. Join us for tips about cat behavior that will lead to a better understanding of. and relationship with, our feline friends. We will discuss how cats communicate, and will focus on common behaviors that lead to conflict-namely, destructive scratching and litterbox issues.
Amy Fischer is a Teaching Associate and Extension Specialist with the University of Illinois Department of Animal Sciences, where she coordinates the Companion Animal Biology and Humane Education program. This program emphasizes the science of companion animals as well as their roles in society, and encourages students to apply knowledge through a variety of internships, service-based learning projects, and other opportunities based on community partnerships. Fischer serves on the Boards of Directors of the Champaign County Humane Society and the Alliance for Contraception in Cats & Dogs. She has volunteered with numerous domestic and international cat and dog population control campaigns, and is deeply committed to advancing the application of nonsurgical sterilization methods in humane population control. Fisher attended the University of Wisconsin, where she received her Ph.D. in Animal Science in 2004.

In this webinar, our presenters will discuss the best practices on how to handle reactive dogs and how to employ positive training methods to get the results you want. They will also cover the important of safety in working with kids and their dogs. This webinar will also look at the use of crating, fenced in areas, and dogs being on and off the leash.
Lucinda B. Miller, Ph.D, is an Assistant Professor with Ohio State University Extension. As an Extension Specialist, 4-H Youth Development, Miller is responsible for providing leadership to Ohio 4-H small animal and companion animal science programs, focusing on life skills, best practices, and career development. Miller also provides leadership to 4-H PetPALS, a volunteer leader-directed animal-assisted activities program linking youth and their pets with senior adults. Miller lives on an 86-acre farm in Central Ohio with her husband, 14 Quarter Horses, 4 Nigerian Dwarf Goats, 2 pet rabbits, 7 chickens, 4 cats, and 6 dogs. She is an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator, does animal-assisted activities visits with her dogs, rabbits, and chickens, shows Salmon Faverolle chickens, and enjoys bicycling.
